A Personal Connection
A Note from Brooke Felber
As an Army wife, I understand that military life is built on duty and community. I also know that transitioning out of service or navigating retirement can feel like entering a confusing new landscape—especially when it comes to healthcare.
At HonorGuard, we don't see you as a "lead." We see you as a neighbor who earned specific benefits through years of hard work. My goal is to ensure you never feel lost in the paperwork.
VA benefits are an incredible resource, but they are often misunderstood. Let’s look at the basics
without the jargon.
VA healthcare is a "health system," not a traditional
insurance plan. You receive care at VA facilities from VA providers. It doesn't always cover you at your local private hospital down the street.
Your access and costs are determined by your Priority Group. This can change based on service-connected disabilities, income levels, and other factors. It’s important to know where you stand.
While the VA offers excellent
pharmacy benefits, you must use their system. For many,
having a backup option for
local pharmacies provides peace of mind.
How VA and Medicare Work Together
A common question I hear is: "If I have VA benefits, do I even need Medicare?"
While not required, many Veterans choose to enroll in Medicare Part B alongside their VA benefits. Here’s why:
Flexibility: Medicare allows you to see non-VA doctors and use non-VA hospitals.
Protection: If VA funding ever changes or a local facility closes, Medicare ensures you still have coverage.
No Double Coverage: They don't coordinate; they work independently. VA pays at VA; Medicare pays at private clinics.
Why Clear Guidance Matters
The transition to Medicare can be overwhelming, and many Veterans are never told how their
military benefits interact with civilian options. Making an uninformed choice can lead to late-
enrollment penalties or gaps in care that you shouldn't have to face.
I focus on education first. We sit down, look at your specific VA status, your current health needs,
and your budget to see if adding a Medicare plan makes sense for you.
There is no pressure to buy a plan. My door is always open for a conversation to help
you understand your options and ensure your family is secure.
